Sam P. Jones papers, 1863-1950.

The collection consists of papers of Sam P. Jones from 1863 - ca. 1950. The papers includes correspondence mostly from 1863-1907; writings, sermons, lectures; and diaries, journals, and notebooks. The correspondence contains mainly letters from various individuals and organizations throughout the United States requesting Rev. Jones to speak, making arrangements for same, and remarks of individuals who had attended a sermon or lecture. The writings, sermons and lectures include some relating to his work in promoting prohibition. The diaries and journals (1892-1923; with gaps) were kept mainly by his wife, Laura McElwain Jones and document mostly her social and daily activities in Cartersville, Georgia.

Samuel Porter Jones, evangelist, was born 16 October 1847, in Oak Bowery, Alabama, and died 15 October 1906, near Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up in Cartersville, Georgia, was admitted to the bar (1866) but abandoned law and converted to Methodism; he married Laura McElwain (1868). He began to evangelize after his appointment as agent for the Methodist Orphan's Home in Decatur, Georgia (1880) and became a national figure by the mid-1880s.
